The Best Kind of Chaos: Counting Down to Kid Time

There’s a certain kind of excitement that builds in the days leading up to having my kids back home. It’s not the “weekend trip” kind of excitement. It’s something deeper — a steady hum that sits somewhere between anticipation, joy, and pure dad energy.

If you’re a solo parent, you know what I mean. You go from quiet evenings and take-out containers to a full house of laughter, socks on the stairs, and questions that start before the coffee’s finished brewing. And somehow, that’s exactly what makes life feel right again.

The Quiet Before the Beautiful Storm

The night before they come home, I always catch myself doing small things — folding blankets they’ll immediately unfold, checking the pantry for their favorite snacks, making sure everyone’s pajamas made it through the laundry (keyword: made it through, not folded).

It’s this weirdly sacred ritual — the calm before the chaos, where the house is quiet but my mind is already full of their voices.

What They Don’t Tell You About Solo Parenting

There’s a moment every parent who co-parents or rotates schedules understands — that bittersweet in-between space when you miss your kids so much it aches, but you also know the quiet has its purpose.

It’s where you recharge, catch your breath, and prepare to pour yourself back into the role that defines you. And every time they walk through that door, it feels like all the pieces snap back into place again.

The Best Noise There Is

Tomorrow, the house will sound alive again — laughter bouncing off walls, sibling debates over who gets the last granola bar, maybe a little chaos during bedtime negotiations.

And I’ll be right in the middle of it — exhausted, overwhelmed, and happier than I’ve been all week.

Because that’s the beautiful part about being a parent. You can spend days preparing for the quiet, but it’s the noise that reminds you why you do it all.

☕ Until next time,
Here’s to the chaos, the laughter, and the messy kind of love that makes it all worth it.
